Can reading make a difference in a kid's life? “Absolutely,” says Jeff Smith, fifth grade teacher at Sable Point Elementary School in Longwood, Florida. After previewing Kandide and the Secret of the Mists by Diana S. Zimmerman, Smith decided that this book would make an important personal growth and pro-social reading project for his class. “I felt that it would not only increase my students’ reading, comprehension, and creative skills, but also teach important life lessons, namely that it is okay to be different, but that it is not okay to bully or make fun of others. Kandide is packed with fantasy, action, and adventure, and the boys love it as much as the girls. This is the third year we are using the book in my class.” ![]()
